Official statewide standard for youth electric micromobility safety

Section 05 — For Families & Riders

What E-RIDE Certification means for your rider.

If your young rider is getting an electric-assist bicycle — or already has one — E-RIDE Certification is the standard Minnesota communities are looking to as e-bikes become faster, heavier, and more common on shared paths and streets. It is a single, recognized measure that a rider is ready for the roadway, not just old enough to own the machine.

Certification is earned, not claimed. A rider completes instruction and passes official competency evaluation, and the result is an E-RIDE certification that families, schools, and cities can count on.

Know the machine

Which class of e-bike your rider has, the power limits that define it, and the speeds it is lawfully built for.

Stop safely

How added weight and electric assist change braking — and bringing the bike to a controlled stop when it matters.

Share the path

Where e-bikes are permitted, how trail rules differ from street rules, and courtesy toward pedestrians and other riders.

Ride predictably

Crossing intersections the way traffic expects, staying visible, and riding defensively in mixed conditions.

Questions about certificationBrowse common questions

How certification works

01

Instruction

Riders complete E-RIDE certification courses led by an authorized provider — covering the competency domains in plain, practical terms.

02

Official competency testing

The provider administers the Board's official evaluation across all four domains. A rider must demonstrate competency in each one.

03

E-RIDE certified

Riders who pass earn E-RIDE Certification — the statewide benchmark families, schools, and communities recognize.

Families and schools enroll riders directly with authorized providers. Minnesota E-Bike Safety Academy is the Board's premier accredited statewide provider of E-RIDE certification courses and official competency testing.

Section 06 — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions, answered by the Board.

What is E-RIDE Certification?

E-RIDE Certification (Rider Instruction & Devices Education) is the statewide benchmark standard for youth e-bike safety, established by the Minnesota E-RIDE Safety Standards Board. It verifies that a young rider can demonstrate competency in equipment classification, braking dynamics, pathway jurisdiction, and intersection navigation — a single, uniform measure of roadway readiness that cities, schools, and families can rely on.

Who delivers the training and testing?

Instruction and official competency testing are delivered exclusively through the Board's authorized provider network. The Minnesota E-Bike Safety Academy is the Board's premier accredited statewide provider; families and schools enroll riders directly with authorized providers.

Is E-RIDE Certification required in my city?

Adoption is decided community by community. Cities, school districts, and agencies considering the standard can request model ordinance language, safety impact summaries, and briefing materials from the Board. Check with your local city council or parks department to learn where adoption efforts stand in your area.

What does a certified rider have to demonstrate?

Certification is grounded in four core competency domains: motor classification, power limits, and speed compliance; dual-brake dynamics, momentum physics, and stopping distances; multi-use pathway jurisdictions and trail etiquette; and intersection navigation, visibility, and defensive riding. A candidate must demonstrate competency in all four domains to be certified.
